Reducing Back Pain with Sculpt

Back pain is extremely common in today’s society with studies showing that for the majority of people with back pain, it is essential that they ‘keep moving’ in order to effectively manage their condition. It has been found that people with back pain can often have weaker abdominal muscles. The deep abdominal muscles (transversus abdominis) help to provide support to the back, working similar to a corset. Strength in the deep abdominal and pelvic floor provide support and stabilise the spine, so if these areas are weak, it can make the back vulnerable. Pilates is particularly good for many people with lower back pain as it is designed to strengthen the deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles (tzone), which provide support to the back.
To effectively improve support for the back, and to prevent injury, you must be able to perform an effective pelvic floor and deep abdominal contraction. We go through a Tzone activation at the beginning of every class. If you cannot contract your pelvic floor or deep abdominal muscles effectively, more advanced exercises may place too much strain on your back and other joints. We encourage you to apply the tzone activation throughout your everyday life to maximise the benefits. Pilates incorporates stability of the core to increase flexibility, tone, and muscle strength.
Posture and balance are important components also, which is why we often perform standing exercises in class.
If you have severe back pain please consult your GP or physiotherapist to ensure there is not something serious before participating and please discuss this with your Pilates instructor prior to class.
